Aligned with its commitment to promote sports, the education department of the Delhi government has introduced a fresh set of accolades aimed at recognizing the contributions of sports and yoga instructors. Termed as the State Sports Teachers Awards, these honors will be presented at an upcoming ceremony, coinciding with the established State Teachers Awards.
The recipients of these awards encompass coaches, physical education (PE) teachers, and yoga instructors stationed in various coaching centers, complexes, stadiums within the sports branch, as well as those in schools operated by the Delhi government and local bodies.
A total of 15 awards will be distributed, featuring one for the most outstanding sports coach or yoga teacher affiliated with a sports branch coaching center, twelve for exemplary PE teachers, one from each district, an additional one for the finest PE teacher from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), another for the top yoga teacher from the Directorate of Education, and one last award for the premier PE or yoga teacher from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) or Delhi Cantonment Board.
Evaluation criteria for the teachers will be based on their performance over the past three years. Coaches and teachers from the sports branch are required to demonstrate notable achievements in national and international competitions. Similarly, those from schools are expected to showcase results in zona, inter-zonal, national, and international competitions. The guidelines for the awards emphasize qualities such as dedication and care towards enhancing the physical fitness of students.
This initiative is yet another step by the Delhi government to foster excellence in sports. Concurrently, efforts are underway to admit students to a newly established sports school, which will operate under the auspices of the recently formed Delhi Sports University. This institution will provide training in ten Olympic sports, and sports performance will be seamlessly integrated into the core assessment system of the school.
