Keira D’Amato made a triumphant return to the track after a seven-year hiatus and has since achieved remarkable success. This past Sunday, D’Amato shattered the US women’s field marathon record, completing the 26.2-mile race with a winning time of 2:19:12.
The 37-year-old mother of two surpassed the previous record set in 2006 by runner Deena Kastor by an impressive 30 seconds. Kastor, acknowledging D’Amato’s achievement, extended her congratulations on Twitter.
Reflecting on her historic accomplishment, D’Amato expressed her elation, stating, “I just can’t believe this! I’m really tired, but I’m really, really happy!” She emphasized that age is merely a number and that one can pursue their dreams regardless of their age. Grateful for the support of her family, she remarked, “I’m just so fortunate to have a family that supported that.”
The finish line of the Chevron Houston Marathon’s 50th-anniversary event welcomed D’Amato, where she was greeted by her children, Tommy and Quinn, aged seven and five, respectively. Having undergone ankle surgery in 2008, D’Amato initially believed her distance running career was over. However, she resumed running in 2016 and quickly emerged as one of the fastest marathoners in the United States.
D’Amato’s story serves as an inspiration for those seeking to revive their creative or athletic aspirations, proving that determination and support can lead to extraordinary achievements.
